About Us

OUR MISSION

Build a livable, inspiring future in space that enhances well-being and quality of life for people everywhere.

WHO WE ARE

The Space Age brings design to bear to the toughest problems facing human spaceflight.

As an independent design consultancy, we integrate a wide range of design capabilities and knowledge, then work to bridge the divide between the commercial aerospace companies building things in space and their potential customers.

We work with commercial aerospace companies and their customers to design space stations and habitats that serve everyone’s needs.

We are multifaceted designers taking a human-centered approach to design for space. We’re working to build a more thoughtful connection between space systems providers and their clients.

Our name, “The Space Age,” evokes a period of history characterized by a shared vision for the future that was optimistic, bold, and equitable. We are driven to bring that sense of optimism back into the design of today’s space systems and move beyond a place of pure functionality to something more.

OUR VALUES

Core to our practice is the belief that humans were meant to live in space, not just survive there. But how we do it matters.

Doing it right will be evidenced by a better quality of life for everyone, whether in space or back on Earth.

We believe that good design goes hand in hand with quality of experience. We design and build real things for real people. The best design ideas are rooted in reality and are achievable.

Sustainability is a fundamental way of thinking and working. We can help ensure sustainability by practicing innovation and responsibility. We think in systems, designing not just objects or spaces, but resilient frameworks that adapt, respond, and endure.

Curiosity is a critical ingredient in everything we do. Generalists and Specialists are equally important. We must strive to constantly reinvent ourselves and our work by taking creative risks. Building the future requires innovation; innovation requires creative destruction. Keeping the doors open and lights on is necessary but not sufficient.

We must embody the future we’re trying to build: optimistic, bold, and equitable.

OUR VISION

We are at a pivotal moment in the history of human spaceflight.

Going to space has traditionally been difficult, expensive, and dangerous, reserved for extreme risk takers, highly trained civil servants, and the most adventurous, and wealthiest, tourists.

Today, more people and more types of people are traveling to space for a growing number of reasons. Eventually, as with commercial air travel, going to space will become available to the general public. Designing that future and defining the way we experience space needs to start today.

That we, so far, have been going to space with only minimal attention to quality of life is a bug, not a feature.

Designing for human functioning and well-being in space suggests an approach that is fundamentally different from the way we currently do things. As we shift to the long-term habitation of space, we’ll need to do much better than just survive.
